The Last Word

The year is 1643AD. England is at war and everyone has an opinion.

The people of Egham have found themselves pitted against each other in a bitter and violent feud. At its heart lies a struggle for power and principles, ignited by deep-seated tensions.

In this turbulent period of history, where family fight against each other and the fate of a nation hangs in the balance, the true cost of freedom is measured in blood, sacrifice, and the resilience of the human spirit.

The quest is to uncover the intricate web of causes that precipitated this conflict, navigate through the tumultuous landscape of 17th-century England using research and strategic thinking in order to understand and weave together a plan for change.

As the participants unravel the threads, they journey alongside key figures and ordinary folk alike, witnessing the pivotal events that shaped the destiny of a nation. With each revelation and every twist in the narrative, they move closer to the ultimate goal: to have the last word.

In this interdisciplinary unit, students were immersed in an experience which led them to explore the concept that words are like weapons and can be more deadly than real bullets. Three Egham citizens entangled in the Royalist-Parliamentarian conflict, passionately champion different perspectives on the war, each seeking to sway the students in their favour. Each character possesses a unique backstory and participants must unravel the motivations behind their ideologies and assist them in solving a dilemmas or obstacles presented to them. These ‘challenges’ manifest as physical, logical, or creative activities, subtly prompting participants to explore their disciplinary knowledge. For instance, a creative challenge involved the collective composition of a poignant poem that articulates the character's sentiments regarding the conflict. In this dynamic and engaging setting, participants not only explore the potency of words as weapons, but also integrate their skills and insights into the historical narrative.

Along the way, there are pieces of information, clues, objects and tasks to find and complete, all of which feed into the narrative and allow groups to work together to research and explore the broader canvas of the civil war. Embedded within a scavenger hunt framework, each discovery contributes to accumulating points, fostering a sense of shared exploration and research that culminates in a rewarding conclusion to the quest.
